Rebecca Lopez

Rebecca Sandalo Lopez-Golden, a retired nurse of 55 years in Surgical Nursing, author, and dedicated family matriarch, has led a life of profound impact and unwavering dedication. Born as the sixth child among twelve siblings, Rebecca learned the value of resilience and compassion early on. After graduating from Southern Islands Hospital School of Nursing  in 1969, Rebecca dedicated ten years to serving in the Operating Room at Southern Islands Hospital, where she gained invaluable experience and expertise. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Southwestern University in Cebu City, Philippines, in 1972. Throughout her early nursing career, she was a dedicated member of CASAC ( Cebu Archdiocesan Social Action Center) and its volunteer arm, KASK (Kalihukan Alang sa Katarungan-Social Action for Justice). The ideals and principles of justice she encountered during this time enriched her knowledge and became the core values guiding her personal and professional life.

With a career spanning over five decades, Rebecca subsequently continued her nursing journey in the United States, initially working as an OR nurse in Southern California for five years in the Orthopedic Specialty. Later, she transitioned to Northern California and dedicated 33 years of service at Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley, California, where she served as the Charge Nurse In Orthopedic Surgical Services, Operating Room for 12 years. During her tenure, she also held the position of Charge Nurse in the Operating Room for 22 years, overseeing numerous surgical procedures and managing a team of dedicated healthcare professionals. These diverse experiences have shaped her career and enriched her passion for nursing.

In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she has always had a passion for education and professional development. She earned her CNOR certificate, signifying her dedication to excellence and expertise in the Operating Room. As an author, she collaborated on a learning module titled “ Shoulder Arthroscopy,” sponsored by MedCom, to provide valuable insights into this specialized area of orthopedic surgery.

In 2012, she single-handedly took on the challenge of organizing a one-day Education event titled “ Orthopedic Excellence in Total Joint Surgery” at Alta Bates Medical Center. This event brought together renowned orthopedic surgeons as speakers. It garnered widespread acclaim, receiving a prestigious 5-star award and allowing her to have a special breakfast with the hospital’s CEO.

Building on the success of the Orthopedic Excellence event, she spearheaded another comprehensive seminar focusing on “Spine Surgery” two years later. This event further solidified her commitment to advancing knowledge and excellence in orthopedic surgery.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Rebecca is a devoted family woman. Despite his health challenges, she finds joy in travels and adventures with her loving husband, serving as a source of strength and inspiration. She cherishes spending time with her three children, two grandchildren, and nieces, fostering close bonds and creating cherished memories. Rebecca’s passion for family extends beyond her immediate kin. She has been instrumental in organizing and leading numerous family reunions, emphasizing the importance of family unity and connection.

With a heart full of love and a resilient spirit, Rebecca inspires those around her, leaving an indelible mark on both professional fields and her beloved family. Amidst her travels and adventure she also found time to pursue her passion for writing, culminating in the upcoming release of her inspirational book.
